Story-time with Aaron: Part 3

I wasn't sure about this one last night, but now it seems okay... A little more rambly. Sort of a fiction diary, in places. So here it goes.

---

Death is the only black man in an all white town. He would leave, probably, if he didn't have to take care of his white mother. She can't take care of herself. She named him Death. She never understood why his father left her.

Death's mother's name is Guinevere. She says she has a ball of yarn that changes the shape of the universe to any shape she thinks of. She doesn't need the yarn.

"Let's go to the library," says Death. "It's a nice day."

There is no reason not to go. Death tosses the remaining chunk of white bread into the river, where it lands gently, floats, hydrates, and floats.

Walk back along the river road, under the trees, past decent houses. The library is on the other side of the river. Walk across the drawbridge, to the joint. The blue metal is raised for a sailboat to pass through, under power.

"If it wasn't a sailboat, it could pass under the bridge without stopping traffic. Do you think they even sail it, out on the lake?"

Aaron seems to have been thinking of something else. "No way we can know from here, is there?" he says, "Why do you talk so much, anyway?"

Walk on down the bridge, cross the street, go into the library. It is a medium-size town library, better than it would be if it wasn't competing with the medium-size town library in the next town.

"What did you want to do at the library anyway, John?"

"Oh, nothing in particular," says Death. "I just like it here."

The library has two halves. The children's section has picture books and puppets. The adult section has word books and videos.

"You know, the first time I went into the adult section as a kid was with my friend Jim from school. Maybe the only bigger bookworm than me in our school. He just about threw a fit because he thought I was making too much noise in the stacks talking to him."

"I remember Jim," says Aaron. "He's lost a lot of weight, I hear."

Walk through the library like a park planted with shelving. Meander.

"There sure are a lot of books."

Death agrees. "Even if you did nothing else, you could never read them all. It's ridiculous, isn't it? Just making books like sandcastles on an infinite beach."

"I've read them all," says Aaron.

Death chuckles.

"Huh?"

"Just a joke. You know how jokes work, don't you? The teller says something ridiculous, and the receiver is momentarily confused. Then the receiver realizes it's ridiculous, and it's funny." Aaron is satisfied with this explanation.

"Do you really think that's how comedy works?"

He does. "Take the classic example. 'Why did the chicken cross the road?' The listener searches for some clever answer that would make this a question worth asking. When the answer comes, it turns out it was just a ridiculous question. The listener can stop trying to understand it and just smile."

"It's really not a very funny joke though, is it?" says Death.

"But what if the listener and the speaker don't agree on what's ridiculous? There isn't always a punchline like that."

Aaron's answer. "You know, I read a book here once, in this very library. It was the first book I ever read on quantum mechanics. It was called 'Taking the Quantum Leap.' The book suggested that I had written it."

"What are you talking about?"

"The book said," Aaron continues, "that according to the scientific theory of quantum mechanics, I could be the only person in the universe, with everything in the universe the creative product of my own subconscious. Including every book I read. Including 'Taking the Quantum Leap'."

"So?"

"So I've had a hard time, ever since then, taking anything particularly seriously." Aaron comes to the point. "But to answer your question, if the other person doesn't know that you think what you're saying is ridiculous, there are two options. Either they'll think you think something they think, or they'll think you think something they don't think."

Death goes back to the joke. "And how are they then, all the books?"

Aaron is quick to answer. "You know, they're really all about the same. It seems like all the new books that come out are just reworkings of old books into the current language."

Can exhasperation be mild? "Wherefor art thou Romeo?"

"Quite so." Death changes the subject. "What do you think there are more of, people or books?"

"Do you mean copies, or titles?" asks Aaron.

"There must be more individual volumes, right? There must be a hundred thousand books in this library alone. Some titles sell millions of copies, just think of that." Death gazes around the library. The ceiling is a good deal higher than it really needs to be.

"Some people write a lot of books, but then, most people don't write any, I suppose. None that are published, anyway."

Aaron asks another question. "People that are alive now, or all people in history? Same question with books."

"Books don't die like people though..." says Death.

"Well sure, John, but Alexandria burned, didn't it?Anyway, let's just say people and titles you can find on Earth today. I think it's got to be people. Hardly anybody writes books, really, but it seems like everybody's trying to make more people." Aaron considers the issue settled.

Death seems convinced too. "Speaking of which, take a look at that." Death is looking at a pretty girl standing with an open book about twenty meters away. "Aaron, go talk to her."

"What? If you're interested, why don't you go talk to her?" says Aaron.

Death smiles. "Didn't I tell you? I've got a girlfriend now. You don't, do you? So go talk to her. What have you got to lose?"

"What have I got to gain, though?" says Aaron. "Whatever. Will it make you happy?"

Aaron strides away. Stand with Death. Pretend to flip through pages in the audiobook section. Wait a bit. Aaron comes back.

"So?"

"I asked her if she thought there were more books or people in the world," says Aaron.

Death laughs. "And?"

"She said she doesn't speak English," says Aaron.

"There sure are a lot of people in the world."

Story-time with Aaron: Part 2

I went to the gym to train, but I ended up just sitting in the studio and writing this. Huh.

It is Thursday. Take a walk. Both knowing the way, more or less, it is hard to tell who is leading. Aaron leads, but he isn't going anywhere in particular.

Down the sidewalk, along the road, under the trees, tall but not proud. Majestic trees, planted and grown. Across a concrete bridge, impractically steep. Pretty from a distance.

Aaron points. "Would you look at that? It's Death, from grade school! I haven't seen him in ages."

"Death?"

Aaron realizes it is a strange name. "His father disappeared before he was born, and his mother had a strange sense of humor, didn't she? I told him to at least go with something a little more distinctive, you know, not sacrifice his individuality altogether, but when we started middle school he started going by John. Better call him that."

"What did you want him to use?"

"I suggested Judas." Aaron grins. "Let's go!"

Death is sitting on a metal bench, tearing miniscule pieces of white bread and throwing them to the ducks that defecate throughout the park. Aaron gets his attention.

"You know, you're not supposed to feed the ducks."

Death looks up and smiles his recognition. "Aaron! What the heck are you doing here?"

Introductions are exchanged. Death helpfully continues the conversation.

"You know, I go by John, but my real name is actually Death. My mom gave me that name after my father left before I was born."

"Oh, really?"

"Yeah. I used that name all through grade school."

"Yeah, actually Aaron mentioned that, but he said you just went by John now."

Death turns to Aaron. "You did?"

"Sorry." Aaron is not sorry, but now Death can continue.

"After a while I decided that it was actually easier introducing myself to people if I told the little story of my name. You know, it builds trust when you disclose little strange, semi-private things about yourself. Do you have anything like that?"

"Erm..."

Aaron steps in with his.

"I still live with my mother! Here I am, twenty-eight years old, by some reckonings, and I still live with my mother!" Aaron is immensely pleased with himself. "You see what I've done? I've taken something that could be an embarrassing little secret, and by taking ownership of it and disclosing it, I show I'm confident with who I am!"

Death nods in agreement. "Just like that. Disclosing things like that is great for relationships. I read about this disclosing stuff in a psychology book. Which is where I learn most of what I know about relationships."

Aaron laughs out loud. "Good, good!"

Death continues. "Yes, you see how I made a little self-disparaging joke there? It shows I don't take myself too seriously, and makes other people more comfortable around me. With a name like Death, it's important to be a little light-hearted. People can try to see symbolism in every little thing I do."

"A rose, by any other name..."

Aaron frowns slightly. "I don't see how that's relevant."

"Anyway," Death interrupts, "what have you got that you can disclose? Any little thing is fine."

Pause. Death and Aaron wait expectantly, leaning in slightly.

"When I was in high school, one sunny day, I came to this park with a girl that I liked. I was feeling so happy, I started running down the park the long way. I thought she would run with me, but when I looked back she was still back there, shoes in hand, plodding along slowly. I guess it was then that I realized that we would never be."

Pause.

"Oh," says Aaron.

"Oh," says Death.

Story-time with Aaron: Part 1

So I bought an iPod touch, at the more expensive Korean price because I'm impatient, thinking that I would be able to write things on the train. I like the touch screen keyboard, and the size is ideal for train typing. I hope to do my Korean homework on the train when the new semester starts, but I also thought I might be able to write other things for fun. Tap Tap Revenge is pretty darn fun, but one way or another I have actually started writing some stuff. I'm as surprised as anybody. So here's the beginning of a strange little story, written in the second-person present imperative, with a major character with my name. Not really edited at all, just whatever I was rambling at the time. And I think I ought to add, I'm feeling a little sick.

---

"Are you sure you want to see him just today?" Mrs. Tabernacle is a little uncertain. "It's just that, well, he doesn't seem to really believe in himself today."

It can't be helped. "Even great minds suffer from the occasional lapse in confidence. I'm sure he'll be fine."

Mrs. Tabernacle is momentarily confused. "Oh - it's not that. I mean he isn't believing that he exists right now. He can be hard to talk to when he gets like this."

How peculiar. Still, it can't be helped. Head into the house. Follow Mrs. Tabernacle up the stairs. Aaron is laying in bed, shrouded by an extravagantly overstuffed duvet.

"Hello dear, are you existing, at the moment?" Mrs. Tabernacle calls to the corpse.

"Mother," comes the reply, have you been telling people I don't think I exist again? You know I told you, it isn't that, it's just that I don't see any compelling reason to believe that I do exist. It's not the same thing."

Mrs. Tabernacle has heard this before. "Okay dear, well, your friend is here." She leaves the room.

"Cogito ergo sum though, isn't it?"

Aaron sits up to answer. "You know, it's the damndest thing. It's an issue I think is important, and something I think about rather a lot, but do you know what I always have to say first whenever somebody mentions that?"

"No, what?"

"He published it first in French. Did you know he published it first in French?" Aaron does not wait for an answer. "He deliberately did it in French, but everybody insists on quoting it in Latin."

"Oh."

"And that's what I always have to say first. But it doesn't matter. Either way, it's wrong."

"So you don't exist?"

"Well, I'm reasonably well convinced that something has to exist, thanks to ol' Descartes, but I don't see how I should be able to know just what it is. Anyway, why are you here?"

"It's Thursday."

"Ah, yes." Aaron smiles on half of his face. "We still haven't quite got the hang of Thursdays, have we?"

Goals or whatever

So I was on a stationary bike at the gym, and I started thinking about goals. So here are some goals!

BBOYING GOALS

Korea Super B-Boy Championship (KSBC)

It has a silly name, but it's the most fun, my favorite, semi-underground, bboy jam in Korea. It's a 1v1 at Realization crew studio, all free, and I can't see any reason for them to do it, other than the organizer just being a cool guy. Anyway they have it planned out like this. Each "season" is 8 events long. The winner of each of those 1v1 battles goes on to a great 8 event battle to be crowned "king of ksbc". And then they do four seasons, and the four kings battle at the end of it all to be "king of kings". I've entered a couple times but I haven't made it past top 8. My friend Matt just won battle 7 of season one, and now season one is over and he'll be in the great 8 event soon.

So there are still 3 more seasons, which means 32 more one-vs-one battles for me to enter. So here is what I'm thinking.

In season one I made it to the top 8 at least once, maybe more (I don't remember and it would be annoying to go check old videos). So okay good.

KSBC SEASON TWO GOAL: make top 4

KSBC SEASON THREE GOAL: make top 2

KSBC SEASON FOUR GOAL: make top 1

Of course if I win before season four, that would be cool too.

Sub-goal: Make a new battle set for every KSBC battle that I enter. Which means I'll have 32 new sets? DAMN! ㅋㅋ

KOREAN LANGUAGE GOALS

Complete the Yonsei Korean Language Program through level six.

Test to level six on the TOPIK test.

Be generally pretty kick-ass at Korean.

Sub-goal: take that other test with Anthony, whenever that is.

JOB / WORKING / MONEY-TYPE GOALS

Keep doing my current job. Pay off all my debt. Debt sucks. Pay it off! 화이팅! Okay.
